An Accidental Loyalty Win: How an Airport Stay Completed My Hyatt Bingo Card

Nothing cures post-travel blues like a surprise in your inbox! A routine airport stay on our way home quietly unlocked Hyatt’s Brand Explorer perk—and a free night award. Here’s how I accidentally pulled it off.

There’s nothing quite like opening your inbox after getting home from a trip and find a free hotel stay sitting in your account that you didn’t even realize you were earning.

That’s exactly what happened to me recently.

We had just gotten back from our trip to Vero Beach—which included a convenient one-night stay at the Hyatt Regency Orlando Airport on the way home to make travel easier. A day after settling back in, an email popped up from World of Hyatt announcing that I had unlocked a Category 1–4 Free Night Award courtesy of Hyatt’s Brand Explorer perk.

I hadn’t planned a "brand run," tracked a spreadsheet, or tried to hit a milestone. I was just booking what worked best for our family's travel schedule. Here is how this sweet surprise landed in my inbox—and why it’s easily one of the best passive loyalty perks out there.

What Is the Hyatt Brand Explorer Award?

Most hotel loyalty programs reward you strictly for volume—stay 20 nights, reach a tier; spend $X amount, get bonus points. Hyatt does that too, but they also have a fun gamified feature built into World of Hyatt called Brand Explorer.

The concept is super simple:

  • Hyatt has dozens of distinct brands (think Hyatt Regency, Andaz, Thompson Hotels, Hyatt Place, Grand Hyatt, etc.).

  • For every 5 unique brands you stay at, Hyatt automatically deposits a Category 1–4 Free Night Award into your account.

  • It’s a lifetime tally, meaning you don't have to hit all five within a single calendar year.

Because there’s no strict time crunch, you can easily chip away at it over multiple trips without even actively tracking it.

How I Unknowingly Hit the 5-Brand Milestone

Looking back at my recent travel history, I wasn't trying to complete a bingo card. I was simply picking properties based on convenience, location, and style—and making the most of my credit card points! In fact, most (if not all) of these stays were booked by transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points from my Chase Sapphire Reserve card directly to Hyatt, which makes hitting these milestones feel like an even bigger win.

Here is how the 5-brand lineup naturally came together:

  1. Grand Hyatt at SFO — An airport stay in May 2022 purely for convenience after a late night flight into San Francisco.

  2. Hyatt House San Jose Cupertino — Our home base while visiting friends during that same Bay Area trip.

  3. Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta — Our homebase for the CFP National Championship in January 2025.

  4. The Venetian Resort Las Vegas — A trip with family and friends in July 2025 to see the Backstreet Boys at the Sphere!

  5. (The Finisher) Hyatt Regency Orlando Airport — The final piece of the puzzle on our way back from Vero Beach!

When we checked out of the Hyatt Regency, the system automatically registered that it was my 5th unique Hyatt brand. The very next day, the certificate hit my inbox. No promo codes to enter, no customer support calls, and no extra planning required.

Why This Loyalty Perk Actually Works

What I love about the Brand Explorer award is that it doesn't force you into a single style of hotel. Whether you're staying at an airport property for convenience, a full-service resort, or a boutique town hotel, mixing up your choices actively works in your favor.

It’s a rare travel win that rewards variety rather than strict repetition.

Where to Next?

Now comes the fun part: deciding where to use the certificate. A Category 1–4 free night opens up a ton of great options for an upcoming steady getaway or a high-value weekend redemption.

Plus, with so many unique brands under Hyatt's umbrella now, I’m excited to work on the next 5-brand milestone!
